Judge James Clarence McDowell Assoc. Judge
Through an orderly progression Judge James C. McDowell has reached a prominent position as a representative of the judicial interests in Missouri being now Judge of the 28th Circuit court to which office he was elected in 1940.
He was born at Leeman in Cape Girardeau Co. MO Mar. 20, 1890 and is of Irish lineage – his grandfather being a native of the Emerald Isle. His father, James C. McDowell, was a soldier of the Confederate Army, and soon after the close of the Civil War, came to Missouri where he spent his remaining days as a farmer. He died however when his son, Judge McDowell, was but three months old. The Mother was a member of the Irwin family of North Carolina.

Dad was 21 and Mom was 18. They had 12 children. Grace was the oldest – born 1893 – Dec. 2; Birdie 2nd about 1894, Mary 1896, Paul 1898, Ira 1900, Bessie 1902, Frank 1904, Virgie 1906, Robert 1908, Rollie 1910, Glenn 1912 and Jewel 1916. He said Grace, Birdie, Mary, Paul & Virgie were born in Cape Girardeau, MO. Ira was born in Libertyville, MO. Bessie & Frank were born in Farmington. Robert, Rollie, Glen Allen (my Dad), & Jewel were born in Esther, MO and Dad later attended school in St. Louis, MO. I do remember visiting Grandma & Grandpa McDowell in the rock house which is where they lived when Grandma died. She went to the hospital with pneumonia and while there they also discovered the mole on her face was cancerous. I can remember when they brought her home her sons were supposed to help her walk a number of times a day. They set up her bed in the room next to the living room and they would take turns, one on either side to help her walk. I remember her not feeling like walking but one of her last request was to see “little Danny” (my little brother). And when they brought him to her bedside, she was all smiles.
Uncle Ira said Dad was also a preacher & butcher. His Dad died at the young age of almost 47 years and Dad being the oldest, had to help raise his own siblings. After they were raised, his Mother died with cancer. He was a stock trader, store keeper, carpenter and raised cows taking them down to the swamps to graze. And the kids would pick cotton and travel back and forth from Cape Girardeau County to Stoddard to Bollinger. They had an old red cow that wore the bell. Mom would come later with the kids. We traveled in a buggy.
He went to school until after Ira was born. Ira was the fifth child. He said , “Dad was also quite a wrestler and boxer. One time when he was going to Carlton College at Farmington, he went home to dinner and when he came back to school, they had seven of the biggest football players lined up and when he asked them what it meant, they told him he had to throw them before he could get back in. He pulled off his coat and threw all of them one at a time.” Uncle Ira said, “He never told me this but A.W.Hoy who was going to school there at the time did. Finally Mom quit patching his clothes when he tore them wrestling and it sort of slowed him down.”
