1795-1860

History on Jesse Jones life, started at age 13, when he met a lady named: ***Mary Ann McGowan***. She was 25. Yes, there is a BIG difference in their age. Jesse may had been a BIG guy for his age. Not sure when they met, but the two must had fell in love at first sight, for by 1809, they had a son named: Jonathan/John. Not sure yet, if they were married, but on the 1820 census, Connoquenessing, Butler Co.,PA, showed they had two sons. I believe, were Jonathan, born:1809 and William, born 1819/20. There are 10 years between the boys age's. Not sure why this is. Before1830, something happened to Jesse and Mary Ann. Hard to say. Now! It is possible, that Jesse divorce Mary Ann and married to another lady named: Mary Brooks. On the 1830 census, Lewisburg, Union Co.,PA, Jesse was married to a lady around his age. Jesse was with Mary Brooks, born:1796 on 1830 census census. Samuel , born: 1823 was not on the 1830 census. Believe he was with his mother Mary Ann McGowan Jones.

Jesse Jones married to Mary Brooks. Their children were: Jesse L, born 1825, Nancy Elizabeth, born: 1827, Joseph, born 1829, James, born: 1830, Isaac, born:1835, and Ann, born: 1837. Have death records for Nancy, Joseph and James, showing their mother's maiden name BROOKS. Not been able to find info on Isaac and Ann's death, yet. Jesse Jones died, in Dec, 1860. Way the story is told, "He was riding his horse, when he had a stroke of paralysis while he was horse back, when he was only about 65 when fell off the horse. He never got over it and died a while later." Then his wife Mary (Brooks) Jones, died: 1880. Both are buried at the Rose Point Cemetery, Slippery Rock Twp, Lawrence Co.,PA.

Now would say here, of some of the hard times in Jesse Jones life. He lost his son, Jonathan/John, 30, Dec,1833. The story is told, John was a shoemaker. He killed himself by drinking. When he was a young man and followed the shoemakers trade, it wasn't as it is now. He went from house to house with his shoes for who ever needed them. Whiskey was free in those days and there he learned to drink This is how he learned to drink. He was buried at: Rose Point Cemetery, Slippery Rock, Lawrence Co.,PA. Jonathan/John, had a daughter. In Jonathan's father's will, (Jesse Jones) was written: "My son John's daughter Jain (Jane?)" Need to search more here, to find her. I have Jesse Jones will, 6,Dec,1860.

Jesse L, born: c 1825. Believe he was in the Civil War. There is in the Rose Point Cemetery, a marker with GAR on it and with a big rock, beside it. I do believe this belongs to Jesse L Jones. Still looking for info on him. Know he was alive: 25, April, 1863.

Isaac Jones, born: 1835, Died: 30, Dec, 1846. Buried at Rose Point Cemetery. There are two stories here. Since he was 11 years,10 months and 29 days, when he died. (This is on his tomb stone), I would believe this is the true story. Isaac ( not Jesse as the story is told) drowned in a creek high water time. The bridge was wash away but some of the fence was standing with some of the fence. His dog swan across. He tried to go over the bridge and lost his hold, was drowned. That was in Dec and his body was found in February, 30 miles below where he would drown. The second story is: Jesse (Not Isaac as the story is told) was drowned while logging at the age of 16 or 17. Since the story tells of Dec, when he drowned, then this is Isaac. This other story is on James Jones son, Jesse, whom drowned while logging age of 16 or 17. They tell of the wrong names, on these two stories.

(? Barbara?)Ann (Jones) Stickel, born, 1837- Died: 2, Nov,1853. Sad story on her. The story was told, that Ann (Not Nancy, like it was told) married Sly Stickler (Silas Jesse Stickel) and one day while she was grinding coffee at a wall coffee grinder, Sly hit her and killed her. Then he hung her body from the rafters to make it look like suicide. Then he disappeared and was never heard from again. She is also buried at Rose Point Cemetery, Slippery Rock, Lawrence, Co.,PA. (Silas Jesse Stickel- Man named, BROWN, believe he was a detective, looking for Silas, for killing his wife. Don't know for sure, if they ever found him or not.)

*** Mary Ann McGowan Jones***. She was born: 1783- Death: 20, April,1832. I truly believe now, that Mary Ann is buried at Rose Point Cemetery, with all the other Jones. Her tomb stone, I believe, was first of the Jones, buried here. This is why it is hard to read her head stone. She was born at either Rocky Point or Rocky Grove, as the story is told. To the right of her head stone, is the head stone, of her son Jonathan, died: 1833. This is why I do believe, that the head stone for Mary, is Jonathan's mother. He was buried by her. Their head stones were the first Jones buried here.

Joseph Jones, 1829, son of Jesse Jones. This Joseph Jones, had a son: Joseph NEWTON Jones. This Joseph NEWTON Jones, had a daughter: Mattie Lucille Jones Watson. Her father told her of the story, on Jones Lineage. What was told, was not all the truth. BUT, what was told, gave a lot of CLUES. Believe me, had a hard time finding what I was looking for, Thanks to Mary Ann McGowan, she was a big HELP. There is a story here, also to tell. That will be at another time. One may not believe the story about her and myself.

Joseph Jones, born:1829,- On his death certificate. His father was Jesse Jones. In the census,1850, Muddy Creek Twp, Butler Co.,PA, was able to find, Jesse L, Samuel, James and Joseph Jones, all together on one census. Then the searcher, found their father, Jesse on the 1820,1830,1840 census, for me. Many thanks for their help in Butler Co.,PA, also.

The surname: NEWTON. Here again, Joseph Jones was giving us another CLUE. He gave this name to his son: Joseph NEWTON Jones. There are searchers out there, that says she (Mary Newton) was married to our Jesse Jones. Are they right? Maybe! But they say- that this Mary Newton was married in 1818 to Jesse Jones. If this part is true, then she was not married to our Jesse Jones, for Jesse was with Mary Ann McGowan, in 1820 Census. Could it be, that this Mary Newton married to Jesse's son John?
Another BIG HELP came from Bob Jones, of Florida. He wrote to me. Here I started up on the Jones Lineage, again. Bob Jones was a BIG help in knowing more on the Jones Lineage. Many thanks, Bob Jones. If it had not been for you, I still would had not known, that Jesse was married to Mary Ann McGowan.

"Proof from the census."

1820 census, Connoquenessing, Butler Co.,PA.
There were two sons: 1- To 10, William, 10-16, Jonathan and 16-26, Jesse (25) and 26-45, Mary Ann (McGowan) Jones (37).

Between 1820 to 1830 census, believe now that Samuel was born to Mary Ann (McGowan) Jones. That is is why he is not on the 1830 census.

1830 Census, Lewisburg, Union Co.,PA.
There were 2 sons under 5, Jesse L and Joseph, one son 10/15, Jonathan, Father:Jesse, 20/30 and 1 daughter, under 5, Nancy and wife, Mary Brooks, 20/30. Jonathan is Mary Ann's son. For know now Jesse L, Nancy's and Joseph mother, was Mary Brooks. About William and Samuel not being on the 1830 census with his father. They were with their mother, in Connoquenessing Twp or Lewisburg Twp in 1830 census.

1840 census, Muddy Creek Twp, Butler Co.,PA.
1 son, under 5, Isaac, 2 sons, 5/10, Joseph and James, 3 sons, William, Samuel, and Jesse L, 1 male, 40/50, Jesse and 1 female under 5, Ann, 1 female 10/15, Nancy and wife Mary Brooks. I do feel, that the children, from Jesse L to Ann, are Mary Brooks children. Now William and Samuel are with their father and step mother.

1850 census, Muddy Creek Twp, Butler Co.,PA.
This is where I found Joseph and Matilda Jones, when I found the families of Jones. This is when I broke the wall down, on the Jones.
1.Jesse L Jones-25-Shoemaker
Eleanor-20
E - 11/12- Daughter
2.Samuel Jones- 27-Farmer
Jane-25
Samuel-1
3.James Jones-17. Living with Samuel, his brother.
4.Joseph-20-Farmer
Matilda-18
Jesse L, Samuel, James and Joseph Jones are all brothers.
James was living with Samuel. Not sure if Joseph was, also.

Now it is up to you, to believe the beginning of Jesse's life at 13 years of age and a lady, Mary Ann McGowan, 25 years of age. You must remember, back then, the story is told, that the Jones line was WEALTHY. So Jesse had no problems, raising a family, with his parents help.

All information here is from research from Butler Co.,PA, Lawrence Co.,PA and a lot of family members on the Jones Lineage. Appreciate and thanks to all of you.
