Note
He enlisted 18 November 1861 in Company K, 44th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers. His regiment spent the winters of 1861 and 1862 in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Paducah, Kentucky. In the battle of Shiloh he was with many others sick, but left his hammock for the battle-field to do or die, and fought all day in some of the hottest positions of the strife. He was not wounded in the fray, but he was never well again. He died of typhoid fever 30 July 1862 at the General Hospital, Keokuk, Iowa. |
