He said of himself on 3 October 1870: I have spent 8 years of my life in teaching and about 18 in the practice of medicine, mostly in Indianapolis, Indiana. For the last 8 years I have lived here. After driving off the wolves and killing the rattlesnakes we have succeeded in starting a little town: having a post office, blacksmith's shop, grist mill and store and a few houses. We have a farm of a little more than 1,000 acres, mostly in good cultivation and with a plenty of fruit. Our occupation at present is milling, merchandizing, farming, stock-raising and practising medicine when we can not help it.
