He received his classical education at Oneida Academy (later Hamilton College), Clinton, New York, read law with Hon. Jonas Platt of Whitesborough; was for two years in partnership in legal practice with a Mr. Lynch at Rome, Oneida county, New York; when he went to New York and associated himself with Hon. Austin Seely as a law partner, but being threatened with consumption, removed about 1811, to Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was a man of superior talents.
