He was high sheriff of Windsor county, Vermont, for eight years, twice a member of congress (3 terms) at first for two terms (1811 - 1815) and again (1819 - 1821), judge of the county court (1816 - 1818), and for eight years (1798 - 1799, 1801 - 1802, 1805 - 1808), a member of the Vermont Legislature, and in 1834, on of "the council of censors," a man of quick intuitive energy of mind and of eloquence.
