Note
He entered the U. S. Army August 9, 1862, as a private in Co. A, 20th Regt. Michigan Vols., and was appointed successively 2nd Sergt., 1st. Sergt, and 2nd. Lieut. He was killed near the Cumberland River, at Horse Shoe Bottoms, Kentucky, May 10, 1863, by a company of Morgan's Confederate Cavalry. He went to the field of battle, and as it proved to him of death, from an all-animating sense of duty.
