        Grover L. Strong. Into the thirty years of his life Grover L. Strong has compressed a full and varied newspaper experience, and has shown much ability in his chosen field of endeavor. At present he is manager and editor of the Tyler Journal, one of the oldest papers in Lincoln County. It was established in 1881, has well equipped office and plant, and its circulation is well distributed throughout Lincoln, Lyon, Pipestone and Murray counties. Politically it is independent republican. The proprietor of the Journal is M. Glemmestad.

        Grover L. Strong was born in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana, March 8, 1885, a son of Stephen Decatur Strong and Semira F. (Runyan) Strong. The Strongs were originally from Scotland, settling in America in colonial times. The great-grandfather was a New Hampshire volunteer in the Revolution. The Runyans are of German ancestry. Stephen D. Strong was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, November 7, 1857, and died at Tracy, Minnesota, May 17, 1910, while his wife was born in Henry County, Indiana, November 10, 1861, and is still living at Tracy. From Cincinnati the father removed to Henry County, Indiana, then to Madison County and to Howard County, in the same state, in 1896 transferred the family home to Arkansas, thence to Ringgold County, Iowa, and finally returned to Madison County, Indiana, but a short time before his death took up his residence in Tracy of this state. He was a merchant and farmer, but his last years were spent as carpenter, a trade he had learned in his youth. There was a large family of thirteen children : Iva A. is the wife of William R. Douglas, a flagman on the Northwestern Railroad, with home in Tracy;
        Edgar, who died at the age of two years ; Ethel M., wife of Ervin E. Morrow, in the flour, feed, coal and fuel business at Diagonal, Iowa; Grover L. ; Carl C., a repairman at Tracy with the Northwestern Railroad; Jennie L., who died at the age of seventeen; Cynthia A., telephone operator at Minneapolis for the Tri-State Telephone Company; Clarence F.m who
        is assistant foreman in repairing tracks on the Northwestern, at Tracy; Charles D., a railroad clerk at Tracy; Lena, a telephone operator, but now living at home with her mother; Harold F., in the Tracy High School ; Cecil, in the public schools ; and Lysle, who died at the age of five months.

        The first school attended by Grover L. Strong was in Howard County, Indiana, and the last in Benton County, Arkansas, where he graduated from high school at Gentry in 1900. He worked on his father's farm and continued the same labor in Ringgold County, Iowa, one year. His apprenticeship in the newspaper business was a six months period spent with the Knowlton News, at the end of which time he became manager and remained with the paper two years. His experience was given the broadening influences of metropolitan training by three years of practical work in Chicago. In the meantime his parents had returned to Madison County, Indiana, where he found employment on several papers. In
        1908 he established a prohibition sheet at Elwood in that county, and then removed it to the county seat at Anderson, and a few weeks later sold it.

        Mr. Strong came to Minnesota in the spring of 1909, and the next three years were spent as superintendent of the Headlight at Tracy. Since June, 1912, he has been manager and editor of the Tyler Journal. He is active in social and civic affairs, is chairman of the County Republican Central Committee, is chairman of the board of trustees of the Congregational Church and chairman of the County Sunday School Association. On February 14, 1912, at Marshall, Minnesota, Mr. Strong married Miss Joyful Anna Cahow. Her father, Frank G. Cahow, is a farmer at Tracy.
